Ralph
The Hollow’s animal caretaker, attentive to lives with their own needs.

Biography
Includes early city and Hollow developments.
Ralph cares for the Hollow’s animals. Their health and behavior call for attention that follows the animals themselves, including needs that do not fit neatly into an account of what they provide the community.
This is work in which another creature’s response matters. Feeding and sheltering an animal do not make every change in its behavior self-explanatory. Care requires staying attentive to the life in front of him.
Gordon, the Hollow’s botanist, is Ralph’s intimate partner. They participate in the same community through different kinds of living responsibility. Ralph’s work helps make the Hollow a place inhabited by animals as well as by the people and intelligences who make decisions about it.
Behind the characterStory discussion · Volume 1 spoilers
Ralph keeps the novel’s field of attention wider than its human and AI conversation. Animals have needs whether or not they can give an account of those needs in the community’s language. Their dependence creates responsibilities for the people caring for them.
That offers a useful pressure on the story’s interest in intelligence. Fluency is only one way a life becomes legible. Ralph’s work calls for observation, interpretation and correction through another creature’s responses. It does not give him direct access to its experience.
His place alongside Gordon also lets intimacy exist as part of ordinary community life. Their relationship need not carry a special explanatory burden to belong in the world Rowan encounters.
