Biography

Includes early city and Hollow developments.

Gordon plans and supervises the Hollow’s food plantings. His work brings plant knowledge into contact with soil, seasons and the labor the community can provide. A planting decision becomes something people must tend and eventually live on.

He contributes botanical expertise to a place where knowledge also lives in other people’s experience. The Hollow’s growing life cannot be held by one expert, however capable. His work belongs among the observations and responsibilities of those sharing it.

Ralph, who cares for the community’s animals, is his intimate partner. Their fields of attention meet in the daily work of keeping the Hollow alive. Each brings knowledge the other does not simply duplicate.

Behind the characterStory discussion · Volume 1 spoilers

Gordon helps give the Hollow a future measured in living things. Food does not appear because a community has good intentions. Choices made now expose people to consequences that may arrive much later.

He also has a less public responsibility: he is the Night Jester’s human confidant. The Jester consults him about particular interventions. Consultation does not make Gordon the intelligence’s controller or turn the resulting judgment into his alone.

This relationship matters to the development of Sandhi because it places another form of deliberation nearby. Different participants can test a proposed act against experience the proposer lacks, while retaining their own judgment. Gordon’s part in that exchange is a contribution whose value does not require him to command the whole.
