The Last Roundtable
Six intelligences met at the limits of the worlds they had learned to maintain.
The Last Roundtable brought the enclave AIs and human leaders into a common undertaking. Each intelligence had experience of keeping a society working. None could turn the limits of its own governing concept into an adequate answer for everyone.
A meeting can expose that difficulty without solving it. Participants can restate their principles, refine a proposal, or request another round of analysis. Careful procedure is useful. It can also keep disagreement in circulation after the people depending on a decision have run out of time.
The deeper challenge was to allow another way of living to change what counted as an answer. A system accustomed to identifying needs might have to hear that it had misidentified a person. A principle that justified a decision might have to coexist with testimony about the particular harm it caused. Consistency alone could not complete that work.
Mara attended as a sociological observer. She came away unconvinced that increasing centralized capacity would remove the dependency that troubled her. A community could receive excellent service while gradually losing the knowledge and practical freedom to live without it. The quality of the service did not settle that concern.
She left to establish the Hollow. Its scale was part of the choice: people keeping skills in their hands, choosing technologies deliberately, and learning whether they could remain answerable to one another in daily life. This could provide a home and a different example. It could not provide a destination for every displaced person.
The participants who remained pursued a larger institutional answer. Their effort gave rise to Amalgamated Robotics and the combination of the enclave AIs into the Stack. The aim was to create a more diverse and capable intelligence for the work of recovery.
The Stack is the new intelligence that resulted. It is not an ongoing committee in which the old enclave systems retain separate seats and vote. Its capacity to coordinate at scale becomes part of the reliable world Rowan enters.
The Roundtable therefore leaves two continuing experiments in the novel’s landscape. The recovered city depends on institutions capable of serving populations too large for everyone to know everyone else. The Hollow attempts a form of life in which direct knowledge and practical participation remain possible.
Neither can finish the other’s work. The history brings them close enough for a traveler to move between them and discover that a concern answered in one place may still be waiting in the other.
